What it is

Chapssaltteok is a soft ball of glutinous (sweet) rice dough, traditionally filled with sweet red bean paste. This fall's version swaps the beans for yogurt and fruit such as strawberry, golden kiwi or ripe persimmon.

The name everyone is talking about is Hanjeongseon, a Korean dessert brand from Seongsu-dong in Seoul. Its convenience-store version with GS25 is a frozen rice cake filled with yogurt cream.

Why it's trending

GS25 sold 400 units in a preview on August 28 at two stores, and both sold out early. After the September launch, the yogurt chapssaltteok sold about 700,000 and was the #1 item by sales in GS25's delivery and pickup service for September, ahead of canned beer. It was searched about 6 million times in the GS25 app.

At Hanjeongseon's own shops the lines are long; one customer told Money Today the wait took 50 minutes. A pistachio cream version reached GS25 stores on October 15.

Where to try it

GS25 convenience stores in Korea sell the frozen Hanjeongseon yogurt chapssaltteok and the pistachio one. Straight from the freezer it tastes like a gelato-style sherbet; let it thaw and it turns chewy. Hanjeongseon's own shops include Seongsu, Seoul Station, Lotte Department Store's main store and The Hyundai Seoul, and waits can be long. Yoajung, a frozen yogurt chain, also started selling fresh-fruit yogurt chapssaltteok at 250 stores in September.

At home: microwave a dough of sweet rice flour, water and a little sugar until sticky, then wrap it around a spoonful of thick yogurt and a strawberry. Dust with starch so it doesn't stick.
