Jinnamgwan Hall여수 진남관

At a glance

Jinnamgwan stands where Admiral Yi Sun-sin based the Jeolla Left Naval Command, which also served as headquarters for the navy of three provinces during the Imjin War; it was here that he planned operations and issued orders. The pavilion that first stood on the site burned during the second Japanese invasion, and in 1599 Yi's successor Yi Si-eon built a large guesthouse in its place and named it Jinnamgwan. After a fire in 1716 it was rebuilt two years later, and that building survives today. Fifteen bays wide and five deep under a hipped-and-gabled roof, it is the largest single-story local government building still standing in Korea, and a small exhibition hall on site covers its history and the war.
