Aqua Planet Yeosu opened as one of the main exhibition halls of the 2012 Yeosu World Expo. It was built four stories high above ground rather than underground, and it is billed as an eco-friendly building running on solar power. Each floor has its own themed zone, such as Ocean Life, Marine Life and Aqua Forest, together holding about 55,000 animals of roughly 300 species. The aquarium also carries out conservation research on endangered species such as the beluga whale and the green sea turtle.
