Booking
No booking needed to visit; the lighthouse is the last stop on a 2-hour GetYourGuide walking tour of central Yeosu.
The 10 m red Hamel Lighthouse marks the end of the breakwater at Yeosu's old port. Its namesake, Hendrick Hamel, was a Dutch East India Company sailor shipwrecked near Jeju in 1653 and held in Joseon for 13 years; his group spent its final years at the Jeolla Left Naval Command in Yeosu before slipping away to Japan in September 1666. The city named the lighthouse for him in 2005. At the foot of the breakwater stands a Hamel statue matching one by Jep Hartman in Gorinchem in the Netherlands, and the back of the lighthouse is carved with scenes of the crew's journey home.
