How to choose a Korean textbook

Most learners do well with one main course book, one grammar reference and the audio that comes with them. A course book gives you dialogues, vocabulary and a set order. A grammar reference lets you look up a pattern when the course book moves on too fast.

If you study alone, pick a book written for self-study, with English explanations and an answer key. If you take a class or want to follow a university program, a course series with a separate workbook fits better. Learn to read Hangul first; our online learning guide has a Hangul workbook and free tools for that step.

What the levels mean, and how they match TOPIK

TOPIK, Korea's official Korean proficiency test, has six levels: TOPIK I covers levels 1 and 2, and TOPIK II covers levels 3 to 6. Many textbooks also say 'Level 1' or 'Level 2', but that usually means a course level at a school, not a TOPIK score.

Only some publishers tie their books to TOPIK. Darakwon says Korean Grammar in Use: Beginning covers the grammar normally taught in Levels 1 and 2 at language schools, the Intermediate volume covers Levels 3 and 4 with practice for the TOPIK Intermediate level, and the Advanced volume covers the grammar of the TOPIK Advanced exam (Levels 5 and 6). Integrated Korean runs across five levels, Sogang University's program across Levels 1 to 6, and Complete Guide to the TOPIK comes as a TOPIK I (Basic) book and a TOPIK II (Intermediate to Advanced) book.

  • Brand new to Korean: Korean Made Easy for Beginners, Korean Made Simple or TTMIK Level 1.
  • Want a full course: Integrated Korean Beginning 1 or Sogang Korean 1A, then the next volumes.
  • Grammar questions: Korean Grammar in Use, from Beginning to Intermediate.
  • Booked a TOPIK I test: Complete Guide to the TOPIK I.

Course books: Integrated Korean, Sogang and TTMIK

Integrated Korean is a KLEAR project supported by the Korea Foundation and published by University of Hawaii Press. The third edition of Beginning 1 has a new color design, and each lesson pairs a conversation, with its own vocabulary list, and a reading passage. The workbook comes in paperback and online.

Sogang Korean is the series Sogang University's Korean Language Education Center lists for its regular program in Seoul, with a revised third edition for Levels 1 to 3. Level 1 is split into two books, 1A and 1B, and the center's website has the audio and the grammar and vocabulary reference books.

Talk To Me In Korean (TTMIK) publishes a numbered textbook series. Level 1 covers basics such as particles, numbers and the present and past tense, and the TTMIK store also sells a bundle of the beginner textbooks for Levels 1 to 3.

Self-study books for your first months

Korean Made Easy for Beginners and Korean Made Simple are both written for people learning on their own. Darakwon's book leans on pictures, tables and short dialogues, and is meant to be finished in a short time. Billy Go's book has 20 in-depth lessons, practice with an answer key in every chapter and extra notes for more advanced learners.

Both start from zero, so either one works as a first book before you move on to a course series or a grammar reference. Billy Go's series continues with Korean Made Simple 2 and 3, and Darakwon's Korean Made Easy series has Intermediate, Grammar and Everyday Life books.

Grammar references and TOPIK prep

Korean Grammar in Use is a reference to dip into rather than read cover to cover. Darakwon groups similar patterns, compares them and shows each one in realistic dialogues, and it also pitches the series as a reference for Korean teachers.

When you book a TOPIK I test, add Complete Guide to the TOPIK I. It walks through each question type, then gives practice questions and two mock tests, with all questions and explanations in Korean and English. As of October 2026 the TOPIK website lists paper-based (PBT), internet-based (IBT) and speaking sessions; outside Korea, check the dates with your local test agency.
