How Koreans eat instant food
In Korea, the convenience store is the classic place for a quick instant meal. A Korea.net column describes stores that are usually open 24 hours, with a large tank of boiling water for cup noodles, free wooden chopsticks and a long shelf where you can stand and eat. Many also have plastic tables outside.
PC bang, the gaming rooms where young Koreans play for hours, are the other big instant-food spot. The JoongAng Daily reports that their menus are mostly quick one-dish meals such as fried rice and ramyeon, eaten at the computer, and that food and drinks bring in about 40 percent of an owner's revenue.
At home the same idea works with a microwave. A bowl of instant rice, a tteokbokki cup and a good sauce make a meal in under five minutes. For instant noodles, our Korean ramyeon guide covers eight packs, from Shin Ramyun to Buldak.

1Best for a bowl of rice in two minutes
CJ Hetbahn cooked white rice (12 bowls of 7.4 oz)
Plain cooked rice in a sealed, microwavable bowl. CJ's listing says the rice is sterilized with high-pressure steam and sealed, so it keeps in the pantry at room temperature with no preservatives. The ingredients are just water, rice and glucono delta lactone, and the label says to heat it for 2 minutes.
-
2Best for tteokbokki without a stove
Dongwon Topokki cup, Sweet and Spicy (6 cups of 4.23 oz)
Rice cakes and a sweet and spicy sauce in a single-serve cup, and this pack holds six 4.23 oz (120 g) cups. The listing's directions are to add water to the line, microwave for 3 minutes and stir in the sauce packet with the fork inside. It stores at room temperature, and Dongwon also sells a cheese version in the same cup.
-
3Best for adding real heat to rice and eggs
Samyang Buldak Hot Sauce, Original (200 g)
The spicy chicken-flavor sauce from the makers of Buldak ramen, in a squeeze bottle. Samyang suggests it for dipping, drizzling or marinating, and the label suggests a teaspoon at a time. Refrigerate it after opening.
-
4Best for a creamy, cheesy Buldak flavor
Samyang Buldak Carbonara Hot Sauce (7 oz)
Samyang combines Buldak's heat with a creamy carbonara-style sauce. The label lists milk cream, whey, cheddar and mozzarella, so expect a richer taste than the Original. Samyang says to refrigerate it after opening.
-
5Best for a mild, ready-to-use gochujang
bibigo Hot and Sweet Gochujang Sauce (2 bottles of 12.16 oz)
A pourable gochujang sauce from CJ's bibigo brand. bibigo describes a sweet, savory flavor with a slow, mild heat from traditional gochujang, and the label suggests a tablespoon on fried rice, eggs, bibimbap or sandwiches. Refrigerate it after opening.
-
6Best for a Korean curry night
Ottogi Vermont Curry Gold, Medium (100 g)
A Korean curry powder mix from Ottogi that dissolves in hot water into a curry sauce for vegetables, meat or seafood. The 100 g pack makes several servings. The ingredients include wheat flour and soy sauce powder.
Start with rice: Hetbahn
Hetbahn is CJ's cooked rice in a sealed bowl. The listing explains how it keeps without preservatives: the rice is sterilized with high-pressure, high-temperature steam and sealed right away, and the container and film are designed to keep air out. Store it in the pantry, away from sunlight, and don't use a bowl whose film is torn.
You can heat it in the microwave or in boiling water, so it also works on a camping stove. Use it under a fried egg with a spoon of gochujang sauce, as the base for our bibimbap recipe, or in the pot after ramyeon, the way our ramyeon recipe finishes the soup.
Tteokbokki without a stove
Fresh tteokbokki rice cakes are perishable, which is why our pantry guide points to the refrigerated kind for cooking at home. Dongwon's topokki cup is the shelf-stable shortcut. The rice cakes and a sauce packet come together in one cup that stores at room temperature. Add water to the line, microwave it for three minutes and stir in the sauce with the fork inside.
The pack linked above holds six cups, and Dongwon also sells a creamy cheese flavor in the same cup. When you want the full street-stall version with fish cake and a pan, use our tteokbokki recipe.
Sauces, and three easy pantry meals
Buldak sauce is Samyang's spicy chicken-flavor sauce from the same line as Buldak noodles, sold in a bottle. Samyang suggests it for dipping, drizzling and marinating, and the label suggests starting with a teaspoon. The Carbonara version folds in cream, cheddar and mozzarella for a richer, rounder taste.
bibigo's Hot and Sweet Gochujang Sauce is the gentle option. It comes ready to use in a bottle, so you can add it straight to fried rice or eggs. All three say to refrigerate after opening.
Once you have rice and a sauce, dinner is close.
Buldak rice bowl: heat a bowl of Hetbahn, top it with a fried egg and a little Buldak sauce, and add more only once you know how hot it is. The Carbonara sauce makes a gentler version.
Curry rice: Ottogi's curry mix dissolves in hot water into a Korean-style curry sauce. Simmer it with diced potatoes, carrots and onion until soft, and serve it over rice. It's an easy dinner for a group, since one 100 g pack makes several servings.
Tteokbokki and rice: heat the Dongwon bowl, then mop up the extra sauce with a little rice. Keep two or three of each in the cupboard and you'll always have a backup dinner.
What we left out, and why
We only list things that keep at room temperature and that we could match to an exact Amazon listing. That ruled out a few good products for now. bibigo's microwave rice bowls with curry or stir-fried kimchi looked like a fit, but neither bibigo's page nor the listing says how to store them, so we left them out. We also couldn't find Ottogi's ready-to-heat curry pouches on Amazon with a listing we could confirm as of October 2026. For instant noodles, including cup ramyeon, see our ramyeon guide.
