Ojukheon is one of Gangneung's signature historic sites, because Yulgok Yi I, one of the great Confucian scholars of the Joseon dynasty, was born in its Mongnyongsil room. The house itself dates from the early Joseon period and is designated a Treasure for its architectural value. Around it stand the Munseongsa shrine, the men's quarters (sarangchae), the Eojegak pavilion and the Yulgok Memorial Hall, which shows works by Yulgok, his mother Saimdang and other family members, Maechang and Oksan. The Gangneung Municipal Museum next door covers the Yeongdong region in three parts: a folk hall of farming tools and household goods, a history hall of prehistoric and Buddhist finds, ceramics, books and paintings, and an outdoor area of stone monuments and restored tombs.

Tips

  • Look for Mongnyongsil, the room in the main house where Yulgok was born.
  • Visiting on a major holiday? Only the historic house is open on Jan 1, Seollal and Chuseok, so plan the museum for another day.
