Booking

Klook, KKday and GetYourGuide sell day tours from Seoul that pair Naksansa with Seoraksan National Park.

Naksansa sits on a headland above the East Sea in Yangyang. The monk Uisang founded it in 671, and with Bomunsa on Ganghwado and Boriam on Namhae it is counted among Korea's three great shrines to Gwaneum, the bodhisattva of compassion. Look for the 16 m Haesu Gwaneum statue, the Uisangdae pavilion on the cliff edge, the Hongnyeonam hermitage looking down on the waves, and a seven-story stone pagoda designated a national Treasure. A wildfire in 2005 destroyed about 20 buildings, including a bronze bell that was a national Treasure, but the halls have all been rebuilt.
