Booking

GetYourGuide sells a private tour from Jeonju that visits Seonamsa Temple, Soswaewon and Juknokwon and ends with a walk through Gwanbangjerim.

For 1.2 km along the Damyangcheon stream, a path on top of the old flood dike runs under a canopy of deciduous trees, many of them more than 300 years old: Aphananthe (pujo), zelkova, Chinese hackberry, cherry and silver maple. The trees were planted to hold the embankment together. Tradition says magistrate Seong I-seong raised the dike and began planting in 1648, and magistrate Hwang Jong-rim extended it in 1854. The forest became a Natural Monument in 1991 and took the grand prize at the Korea Forest Service's 5th Beautiful Forest contest in 2004. A sculpture park of local legends was added on the riverbank in 2005.

Tips

  • Come on a hot day: the old trees shade the whole embankment path, which is why locals treat it as a summer retreat.
  • Pair it with Juknokwon bamboo forest; the GetYourGuide tour visits both on the same day.
