Japanese fishermen began settling in Guryongpo after the 1883 Joseon–Japan trade regulations, and as Japan built the port and took over the east-coast fisheries, Korean fishing rights were pushed aside. Forty-seven Japanese-style wooden buildings remain, and Pohang City restored the street in 2010 as a place to learn that history. A settler's house is now the Guryongpo Modern History Museum, the old Furusatoya restaurant is a teahouse, and the street played Ongsan, the seaside town in the drama When the Camellia Blooms.
