Booking

Klook sells two day tours from Seoul that stop at Goseokjeong: a winter tour along the frozen Hantan River and a Cheorwon canyon tour that includes the cliff-side trail.

The rock that gives Goseokjeong its name is far older than the lava plain around it. Goseok, a lone granite pillar about 15 m tall in the Hantan River gorge, formed deep underground around 110 million years ago; lava from eruptions roughly 540,000 to 120,000 years ago later buried it, and the river uncovered it again while carving a fresh course through the lava plateau. Because the site shows both the older ground and the lava on top of it, it's an important place to learn how Cheorwon's landscape formed. A pavilion of the same name stands nearby, and the name is often used for the whole gorge.
