Booking

KKday sells a Cheorwon DMZ day tour from Seoul that includes the 2nd Tunnel, and Klook sells a Seoul day tour that pairs the tunnel with Pocheon's Sky Bridge and a waterfall.

500 m of this tunnel is open to visitors; inside, it opens out into a chamber big enough to gather a large force and splits into three exits; it was built, KTO notes, to move some 30,000 troops an hour. Found in Cheorwon in 1975, it runs about 3.5 km in total, and seven South Korean soldiers were killed by North Korean forces during the search when it was discovered. An exhibition hall explains its structure and the invasion plans behind it. Cheorwon County runs it as part of a DMZ peace tour that also takes in the Cheorwon Peace Observatory, a monorail and the Cheorwon Crane Center.

Tips

  • Visits run only at set times, so plan your arrival at the registration office around them, and remember the tunnel is closed on Tuesdays.
  • If you don't have a car, the tours from Seoul take care of transport; KKday's also covers the Peace Observatory and the old Workers' Party building.
