Gongseri Catholic Church stands on a rise in Inju-myeon, between Asan Bay and the Sapgyocheon River, near the spot where early missionaries came ashore to preach. The parish was founded in 1894 and first met in a village house; the rectory followed in 1897, and the red-brick Gothic church with its tall spire was completed in 1922; KTO records it as South Chungcheong's first parish church. Three martyrs of the Byeongin persecution of 1866 are buried in the grounds, and zelkova trees several hundred years old shade the hill. Its looks have made it a frequent setting for films, dramas and commercials. In Joseon times the site was Gongsegot, a granary where rice taxes from 39 districts were loaded onto ships for the capital.
