Donghwasa, head temple of the Jogye Order's 9th district, was founded in 493 as Yugasa; it took its present name, 'paulownia flower temple', because paulownias are said to have bloomed in midwinter when the royal preceptor Simji rebuilt it in 832. Most of today's halls, including Daeungjeon, date from a rebuilding under King Yeongjo, and hermitages such as Geumdangam, Biroam and Yeomburam belong to it. It is also a gateway to Palgongsan National Park, with trails toward Yeombulbong, Dongbong and the ridges above.
