The bija tree (Japanese nutmeg-yew) has long been useful to people here: its nuts were taken as a remedy for intestinal worms, and its fine-grained wood was made into furniture and baduk boards. In this forest in Gujwa, protected as a natural monument, about 2,800 of them grow close together over roughly 45 hectares, most between 500 and 800 years old, 7–14 m tall, with trunks up to 110 cm across. Look out for rare wild orchids under the canopy, and for oreum such as Abu and Yongnuni rising nearby.
