What it is

Snail mucin is filtered snail mucus, listed on ingredient labels as Snail Secretion Filtrate. In Korean it is dalpaengi jeommaek (달팽이 점액). It became a K-beauty signature through essences and creams that put it in very high percentages: COSRX's Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence says 96% snail secretion filtrate, and its Advanced Snail 92 All in One Cream says 92%.

What the research says

A 2024 review in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology looked at snail mucin in medicine and cosmetics. It says cosmetic uses include anti-aging, hydrating, anti-acne, scarring and hyperpigmentation products, but that most studies were preclinical or small clinical studies, so larger trials are needed. It lists limitations too: how snails are kept and harvested ethically, allergy investigation and missing clinical studies.

So it's best described as a hydrating, skin-feel ingredient; brands' stronger claims (such as repairing damaged skin) are the brands' own descriptions.

How to choose & use it

Check the label for Snail Secretion Filtrate near the top of the list. Essences like COSRX's list it first, followed by betaine, hyaluronic acid (sodium hyaluronate), allantoin, panthenol and arginine. The cream version adds oils and emulsifiers, so it works as a moisturizer.

YesStyle says to use the cream as the last step of the skincare routine, and notes the essence pairs well with actives such as retinol or vitamin C serums. An essence goes after cleansing and toner, before the moisturizer.

Good to know

It is an animal-derived ingredient, so it is not vegan. Because the 2024 review points out that allergy investigation is still missing, patch-test first: the AAD's method is a quarter-sized spot, twice a day for seven to 10 days. Stop and wash it off if you get redness, itching or swelling.
