Saseongam sits at the top of Osan, about 2 km south of Gurye-eup. First called Osanam, it is said to have been founded in 544 by the monk Yeongi, and its present name, 'hermitage of the four sages', recalls Wonhyo, Doseon, Jingak and Uisang, great monks said to have practiced here. The Yaksajeon (Medicine Buddha Hall) looks wedged between rocks 20 m high, and halls linked by rock and stairs seem to grow out of the mountain. From the hall you look down on the Seomjin River, Gurye town and the ridges of Jirisan, and inside it a standing Buddha is carved into the rock face, which legend says Wonhyo scratched with his fingernail.
