The star here is King Muryeong's tomb, found in 1971 while workers were repairing two neighboring tombs. Its finds, from gold crown ornaments and a stone guardian beast to a coffin of Japanese umbrella pine, show how far Baekje's contacts reached. Seven royal tombs survive from the Ungjin period (475–538), when Gongju was Baekje's capital. Most are stone chambers in the usual Baekje style, but King Muryeong's tomb and Tomb 6 are built of brick in the manner of southern China, a sign of Baekje's ties with the Liang dynasty. With Gongsanseong Fortress, the site is part of the Baekje Historic Areas on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
