Hallim Park began in 1971, when founder Song Bong-gyu sowed palm seeds across some 100,000 pyeong (about 330,000 m²) of barren sand on Jeju's west coast. Today the grounds are divided into nine themed areas, among them a palm avenue, a garden of Jeju stone and bonsai, and Jaeam Folk Village, which recreates old Jeju homes. The park looks out to Hyeopjae and Geumneung beaches and the island of Biyangdo, and ticket listings mention lava caves inside the park.
