Hallasan, the volcano at the center of Jeju, was active until about 25,000 years ago, and its slopes are scattered with oreum, the small parasitic cones around it. Its name is read as 'a mountain high enough to catch the Milky Way', and it was long counted among Korea's three sacred mountains, home of immortals. Protected as a natural monument since 1966 and a national park since 1970, it changes from temperate to subarctic plant life as you climb. Highlights include Baengnokdam, the crater lake at the top, and the Yeongsil rock pillars, tied to the legend of Grandmother Seolmundae and the Five Hundred Generals.

Tips
- Not aiming for the summit? Yeongsil reaches Witse Oreum in about 1.5 hours, and the 1.3 km Eoseungsaengak trail takes about 30 minutes.
- The park asks summit hikers not to go alone: the trails are long and demanding, so hike in a group.
