At a glance

High on the slopes of Hallasan, beside the 1100 Road, more than 16 small wetlands lie scattered across the plateau rather than in one block. In 2009 they were designated a wetland protected area and, the same year, added to the Ramsar list of internationally important wetlands. A wooden nature trail runs through, with panels along the way explaining the animals and plants, among them endangered species such as the peregrine falcon. Water pooling in the low spots serves as a drinking source for wildlife.
