Booking

You can walk the village without a ticket; day tours from Daegu and Busan that include Gyochon are sold on GetYourGuide and KKday.

Gyochon means 'school village', after the Confucian school (hyanggyo) that stands here; the spot first held Gukhak, the national academy Silla founded in 682. Today it is a quarter of restored hanok centered on the old Choi family house, with Gyeongju Hyanggyo beside it. Woljeonggyo Bridge, Wolseong, Cheomseongdae and Gyerim Forest are all close by, and the lanes are lit up after dark.

Tips

  • Stay into the evening and cross Woljeonggyo Bridge right next to the village: KTO lists the bridge as open until 22:00, and both are lit at night.
  • Many Samguk Yusa stories are set along the Namcheon stream here, from Gyerim, where Kim Al-ji is said to have been born, to Jaemaejeong, the well of Kim Yu-sin's house.
