Gyeongju National Museum lays out Silla's whole thousand years, from 57 BC to AD 935, which makes it a good first stop before the sites. Galleries on Silla history and art and the Wolji Gallery on royal life in Unified Silla sit alongside an outdoor display of about 1,300 stone bells, pagodas and Buddhas. Nearby, the open-storage building Silla Cheonnyeon Bogo (opened 2019) puts about 3,000 of its stored objects on view.
