Booking

Day tours from Seoul that pair Guinsa with Ondal Tourist Park and Dodamsambong are on Klook, KKday and GetYourGuide, and Klook also sells a multi-day Danyang, Andong and Gyeongju tour that ends its Danyang day here; templestays are arranged through the temple's website.

Guinsa looks nothing like the wooden mountain temples most visitors know: it is a crowded campus of roughly 50 concrete buildings serving as the head temple of the Cheontae order, which runs about 140 temples nationwide. It began in 1945, when the monk Sangwol Wongak built a small thatched hut on this spot, and the modern rebuilding started in 1966. The centerpiece is a five-story main Dharma hall completed in 1980 that holds about 5,000 people, which KTO describes as the largest Buddhist hall in Korea. The temple also runs templestays, from day programs to overnight stays, and crafts such as lotus lanterns and prayer beads.

Tips

  • Ondal Tourist Park is in the same township, which is why most day tours visit both.
  • Bobaljae Pass, a winding road known for its autumn maples, lies on the way to the temple.
