Booking

KKday and Klook sell Ulju-gun day tours from Busan that end at Ganjeolgot, and Klook sells a seasonal New Year tour that watches the sunrise here before heading to Gyeongju.

Ganjeolgot pushes out into the sea on Ulsan's southern coast, and KTO says the sun rises here before anywhere else on the Korean Peninsula — about a minute ahead of Homigot and five ahead of Jeongdongjin — which is why crowds come every January 1. A white lighthouse, first built in the 1920s, stands above a park of lawns, pines, rocky shore and canola fields. Look for the oversized 'wish postbox': cards dropped in really are delivered anywhere in Korea, and Ganjeolgot Haeolje, the county's local-products shop, gives out free postcards.

Tips

  • Pick up a free postcard at the Haeolje shop and post it in the giant wish postbox; it really gets delivered.
  • If you have a car, Jinha Beach, Seosaengpo Japanese Fortress, the Nasa beacon mound and the onggi pottery village in Onyang are all in the area.
