Cheonjiyeon Falls천지연폭포

At a glance

Cheonjiyeon Falls drops from a cliff of volcanic rock into a pool about 20 m deep. The cliff tells a long story: lava that erupted about 400,000 years ago caps the softer, fossil-bearing Seogwipo Formation, and the falling water has slowly worn the lower layer away, moving the falls farther up the valley over time. The gorge is protected as a natural monument for its warm-climate forest of chinquapin, camellia and rare plants, including a native stand of the evergreen damparsu tree, and the giant mottled eel, itself a protected species, is occasionally found here.
