KKday sells a boat trip to Chagwido with about an hour of trekking on the island.
Chagwi means 'blocked return', and a legend explains why. Ho Jong-dan, a man from Song-dynasty China, is said to have cut the island's 'veins' of earth and water so that no great leader could ever rise here, but as he sailed home a falcon, the guardian spirit of Hallasan, landed on his mast and raised a storm that sank his ship. Today the island group, made up of Jukdo, Jisirido and Wado plus a few rocks, is uninhabited; KTO calls it the biggest of Jeju's uninhabited islands. Some 82 plant species grow here, and sightseeing boats make the 10-minute crossing from Jagunae, a small port on the coast near Gosan-ri.
