What it means

감사합니다 (gamsahamnida) is a polite “thank you.” It comes from the verb 감사하다. The National Institute of Korean Language's Basic Korean Dictionary defines 감사하다 as “to feel thankful for something” (고맙게 여기다) and as the adjective “thankful; grateful” (고마운 마음이 있다), pronounced [감ː사하다].

When to use it

Say it after paying at a register, when staff hand you your order, when someone gives directions or holds a door. A short “gamsahamnida” with a nod is enough.

A friendlier alternative

As a traveler, 감사합니다 is a safe choice with strangers, shop staff and hosts.
