What it's about

Yeon Ji-young, a Korean chef trained in French cuisine, wins a top cooking competition in Paris. On the flight home, during a solar eclipse, she is thrown back into the Joseon dynasty, where she meets King Yi Heon, a feared tyrant with a perfect sense of taste. To stay alive, she has to cook her way into his good graces.

It's based on the novel Surviving as Yeonsangun's Chef by Park Kook-jae. The king is a fictional ruler loosely drawn from Yeonsangun. Jang Tae-yoo directed and fGRD wrote it.

Why people love it

The finale drew a 17.1% average household rating in Korea (peak 19.4%), CJ ENM's highest for a 2025 TV series. On Netflix it was No. 1 on the global non-English TV chart for two weeks running and stayed on the chart for 10 straight weeks.

Lee Chae-min won Best New Actor (TV) at the 62nd Baeksang Arts Awards in 2026. And the food is the star: Korean ingredients meet French technique, like gochujang butter bibimbap.
