What it is
A toner pad is a cotton or fabric pad already soaked in toner, usually sold in a jar of about 60 to 100. You can swipe one over clean skin or rest it on your cheeks for a few minutes. Formulas vary a lot: Olive Young's pad chart runs from soothing and hydrating pads to "peeling" pads made with BHA or salicylic acid.
Why it's trending
On Olive Young's weekly pad ranking for Sep 28–Oct 4 (compiled by Beautics-LAB), MEDIHEAL's derma toner pads took #1, #4 and #9 out of 100. When we checked Olive Young's overall ranking on Oct 14, a derma toner pad was #3 among all products, not just pads.
How to use it & what to look for
Use a pad after cleansing in place of toner, then go on to serum or moisturizer. Dermatologist Dr. Hee Jin Koh told The Zoe Report she rests pads on her forehead, cheeks and chin for about five minutes, and uses hydrating pads on her cheeks and stronger exfoliating pads on her T-zone.
When choosing, first check whether it's a soothing/hydrating pad or an exfoliating one (BHA, salicylic acid, LHA or PHA on the label). The American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) says to exfoliate gently, less often the stronger the product, and with extra care if you already use retinoids, retinol or benzoyl peroxide. Try any new pad on a small patch of skin first.
