Yongmunsa belongs to the Jogye Order and sits on the slopes of Yongmunsan Mountain inside the Yongmunsan tourist area. Tradition dates its founding to 913, late in the Silla period, and it was rebuilt in 1395. The real draw is the ginkgo beside the temple: about 42 m tall with a 15.2 m girth at its base, it's a natural monument that KTO describes as the largest ginkgo in East Asia. Legend says either Silla's last crown prince, Maui, planted it on his way to the Geumgangsan mountains, or it sprouted from a staff that the monk Uisang pushed into the ground.

Tips

  • For a longer walk, follow the valley about 2 km above the temple to Yonggak Rock, shaped like a dragon's horn, then 1 km more to Madang Rock, a flat boulder big enough for about 100 people to sit on.
