At a glance

Legend says the Jade Emperor tore the top off Hallasan and flung it here, and the result certainly looks out of place: an oval lava dome rising abruptly from the flat land of southwest Jeju. With Hallasan and Seongsan Ilchulbong it's counted among the island's three great mountains, and locals say rain follows when clouds wrap around it. High on its southwest face, Sanbanggul is a cave cut deep into the rock, known for its view over the Yongmeori coast and for sunsets. The mountain is protected as a scenic site and designated a restricted area; entering it for management or research needs a permit from the Korea Heritage Service.
