Naganeupseong is an old county seat whose Joseon-era walls, government office, guesthouse, market and thatched houses survive close to their original form; it was the first place in Korea where a fortress and its village were designated a Historic Site together. In 1397 local general Kim Bin-gil raised volunteers and threw up an earthen wall against Japanese pirates, and in 1626 Im Gyeong-eop, then the county magistrate, rebuilt it in stone. Set on open farmland, the wall is about 4 m high and 1,410 m around, enclosing three neighborhoods where many households still live. It was a town of ordinary people rather than nobility, and its lanes have doubled as sets for historical dramas such as Tears of the Dragon and Taejo Wang Geon.
