Round earthen mounds line the ridges that wrap around Daegaya-eup like a folding screen. They are thought to be the tombs of Daegaya's ruling class, built mostly in the 4th to 6th centuries, when Goryeong was the heart of the Daegaya kingdom. Since the first excavation in 1906, about 700 tombs have been investigated: the large ones crown the ridge, medium ones sit lower down and small ones cluster around and beneath them. Tombs No. 44 and 45 were the first royal tombs with sacrificial burials excavated in Korea, and finds here include Daegaya pottery, ironware, horse fittings, a gilt-bronze crown and gold earrings.
