Jeondong Cathedral stands on a Historic Site where Catholics were executed during the Joseon era, outside Pungnammun, the south gate of old Jeonju. Yun Ji-chung and Gwon Sang-yeon, Korea's first Catholic martyrs, died here in 1791, and more believers followed in the persecution of 1801. French priest Father Baudenet bought the land in 1891, and the church, designed by Father Poinsel, who also designed Seoul's Myeongdong Cathedral, was built between 1908 and 1914. Mixing Romanesque and Byzantine styles in red and gray brick with three bell towers, it was the first Romanesque building in the Honam region, and some of its bricks were fired from the earth of Jeonju's demolished town walls.
