Gyeonggijeon was built to house and honor the portrait of Taejo, Yi Seong-gye, founder of the Joseon dynasty, in Jeonju, the city regarded as the dynasty's ancestral home. King Taejong set up portrait halls for Taejo in Jeonju, Gyeongju and Pyongyang; the name Gyeonggijeon dates from King Sejong's reign, and the present hall was rebuilt in 1614 after burning in the second Japanese invasion. The grounds hold the main hall, where the portrait is enshrined, and Jogyeongmyo, built in 1771 for the memorial tablets of Yi Han, founder of the Jeonju Yi clan. A bamboo grove often seen in dramas, stone-walled paths, old pines and plum trees make it a quiet break from the busy Hanok Village, and Jeondong Cathedral is a short walk away.
