Hyangiram is a hermitage of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and a place of prayer to Gwaneum, the bodhisattva of compassion, visited by around a million people a year. Tradition says the monk Wonhyo built the first hermitage here after meeting Gwaneum, and under King Sukjong of Joseon it took the name Hyangiram for its view of the sun rising over the South Sea horizon. A fire on December 20, 2009 destroyed the main hall, the temple office and the bell pavilion, and they were rebuilt and rededicated in May 2012. The surrounding rocks are patterned like a turtle's shell, which gives the hermitage a second name, Yeongguam.
