What it's about

In 1988, the year Seoul hosted the Olympics, five childhood friends grow up in the same alley in Ssangmun-dong, Seoul. Deok-sun and her friends lean on each other through school, first love and family money worries, while their parents share side dishes over the walls.

It's the third show in tvN's Reply series, written by Lee Woo-jung and directed by Shin Won-ho, the team that later made Hospital Playlist.

Why people love it

Yonhap reported a record 19.6% rating for the final episode, the highest yet for a Korean cable TV show at the time. The series also set off a craze for 1980s retro goods in Korea.

People love how it treats everyday life with humor, from the moms' gossip to the dads' awkward love, and the cast became stars: Park Bo-gum, Ryu Jun-yeol and Hye-ri all broke out here.

Where to watch & good to know

It's on Netflix in many countries; check your region. There are 20 episodes, and you don't need to see the earlier Reply shows first: each one is a separate story.

The family dinners are a big part of the show. Try bulgogi, a staple of those home-cooked meals, with our recipe.
