What it's about
In the early 1900s, Eugene Choi, a boy born into slavery in Joseon, escapes to America and comes back years later as a US Marine officer posted to Hanseong (today's Seoul). There he is drawn to Go Ae-shin, a noblewoman who secretly works as a sniper for the Righteous Army, as Japan tightens its grip on Korea.
It was written by Kim Eun-sook and directed by Lee Eung-bok, the duo behind Goblin.
Why people love it
Lee Byung-hun won Best Actor (TV) at the 55th Baeksang Arts Awards. Its premiere was among tvN's highest at the time (8.9%), and as of 2021 it was still one of tvN's four highest-rated dramas, alongside Crash Landing on You, Goblin and Reply 1988.
Viewers praise its film-like cinematography and the courage of its characters, especially Ae-shin.
