What it is

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a humectant, a water-attracting moisturizing ingredient; the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) calls it "known for its intense moisturizing qualities." "Low-molecular" (jeobunja) means it comes in smaller pieces. Torriden's DIVE-IN serum, for example, is sold with a "5D" complex of six HA-type ingredients, and its listing says the small forms sink into the upper skin while the large ones form a film on the surface.

Why it's trending

When we checked Olive Young's overall ranking on Oct 14, hyaluronic serums and creams were #7 and #9. Overseas shoppers are looking too: Hwahae Global's October report says an Abib hyaluronic serum rose 87%, entering its overall top 10 in the fourth week of September and climbing to #5 by the second week of October, while Wellage's Real Hyaluronic Blue 100 Ampoule rose 26%.

How to use it & what to look for

Brands usually place an HA serum after toner and before your moisturizer. The AAD suggests putting moisturizer on right after a shower, while skin is still damp, and picking products that combine humectants like glycerin and hyaluronic acid with lipids such as ceramides and occlusives such as petrolatum.

On the label, look for names like sodium hyaluronate or hydrolyzed hyaluronic acid. If your skin is dry or sensitive, AAD dermatologists suggest fragrance-free products, and the AAD recommends trying anything new on a small patch of skin for 7–10 days.
