Where to stay in Gangneung: Gyeongpo, Anmok, Jumunjin or town?
Gangneung is two hours from Seoul by KTX, and where you sleep decides whether you wake up to a sunrise over the lake, a coffee street or a fish market. Here's how the areas compare, with hotels and two hanok stays to look at.

The short answer
Stay at Gyeongpo for a first trip: it has Gangneung's best-known beach, the lake, the sunrise and several big hotels. Pick Anmok or nearby Songjeong if coffee and sunsets by the sea are the point, Jumunjin for seafood and the Goblin breakwater early in the day, and a hanok near Ojukheon or Gyeongpo Lake for something more traditional.
The coastal City 1 bus, called SEA TEA, links Anmok, Gyeongpo, the Goblin breakwater and Jumunjin with 16 departures a day each way, so wherever you stay, the rest of the coast is a bus ride away.

1Best for sea and lake views at Gyeongpo
SEAMARQ Hotel
A Korean hotel facing the East Sea at Gyeongpo, designed by Pritzker Prize winner Richard Meier and about 15 minutes by taxi from Gangneung Station. It has an infinity pool, an outdoor pool and a kids' club, and its Gallery Double rooms look over both the sea and Gyeongpo Lake; some other rooms face the mountains and the city instead. A shuttle bus runs to and from Gangneung Station at set times.

2Best for staying between the lake and the beach
Skybay Hotel Gyeongpo
A Korean hotel with its main entrance in front of Gyeongpo Lake, about 10–15 minutes by taxi from Gangneung Station, or bus 202 or 202-1 to the Gyeongpo Beach stop. Rooms look out over the lake, the beach or the pines, many with terraces, and the 20th-floor infinity pool faces the East Sea (it closes October 28–30, 2026 for tile repairs).
-
3Best for families and dogs, between Gyeongpo and Anmok
St. John's Hotel
A large Korean hotel in Gangmun-dong, where the pine forest meets the East Sea, with 1,091 rooms including dog-friendly rooms. It has two sea-facing infinity pools, one under a dome that opens fully so it can be used all year. Gangmun Beach, next to Gyeongpo, is the quieter locals' beach.
-
4Best for Songjeong Beach and Anmok's cafés
Shilla Monogram Gangneung
Hotel Shilla's lifestyle hotel on Songjeong Beach, where the sea meets a pine forest, about 8 minutes by taxi from Gangneung Station. Anmok Beach is listed among its neighbors, and it has an outdoor pool with cabanas, an infinity pool, a kids' lounge and pet-friendly rooms.

5Best for Jumunjin Beach and the fish market
Benikea Hotel San & Bada Jumunjin Resort
A family hotel with condo-type rooms on Jumunjin Beach, listed in Korea's Benikea hotel chain, where every room looks out to the East Sea. It has a café in a real train carriage, a summer outdoor pool and bike rental along the seaside path, and the BTS bus-stop set is in the same village, Hyangho-ri.
Gyeongpo: the beach, the lake and the sunrise
Gyeongpo Beach is 1.8 km of white sand on a sandbar between the sea and Gyeongpo Lake, backed by pine forest, about 6 km north of downtown. A bike path circles the lake, which is known for its old pines and spring cherry blossoms, and Gyeongpodae Pavilion looks over it from a small hill; the beach, the lake and the pavilion have been a designated coastal tourist area since 1982. Gangneung City points to the Gyeongpo Beach area for sunrise, which comes at about 6:20–6:50 a.m. in October and 6:50–7:20 a.m. in November.
Next door, Gangmun Beach draws fewer people, and its semicircular Sotdae Bridge, a filming spot for the drama She Was Pretty, is lit in colors at night. From Gangneung Station it's about 10–15 minutes by taxi, or take bus 202 or 202-1.
Anmok and Songjeong: coffee by the sea
Roadside coffee vending machines first drew people to Anmok Beach. Today about 30 cafés line the seafront road, most of them roasting their own beans, beside a 500 m beach and Gangneung Port, where ferries leave for Ulleungdo and Dokdo. Songjeong Beach, about 700 m of sand backed by a well-known pine grove, sits between Anmok and Gangmun, and a pine-forest path runs about 3 km from Gangmun to Anmok.
Buses 223-1, 225-1 and 314-1 take about 15 minutes from the 'Across from Gangneung Station' stop. The Gangneung Coffee Festival fills the street from October 21 to 25, 2026, the same week as the ITS World Congress (October 19–23), so book rooms early that week.
Jumunjin: the fish market and the drama spots
Jumunjin Fish Market, open since 1936, is the east coast's largest seafood market, with a raw-fish center and stalls of dried squid and fish. The port is a fishing base for about 350 boats, with the Jumunjin bus terminal close by, and Jumunjin Beach is 700 m of shallow, clear water with Hyangho Lake beside it.
The breakwater from Goblin is about 1.4 km south of the market on the Yeongjin shore. City 1 also runs north to Sodol's red-lighthouse breakwater from The Glory and to Jumunjin Beach, about 500 m from the bus-stop set from BTS's You Never Walk Alone cover. Staying here lets you reach the breakwater early, when the wait for the classic photo is shorter.
Downtown and Ojukheon: markets, trains and hanok stays
KTX trains from Seoul Station reach Gangneung in about 2 hours. Downtown, Wolhwa Street is a 2.6 km park laid along a former railway line from Gangneung Station, with folk markets and plazas along the way, and Jungang Market, the city's main traditional market, has a seafood floor in the basement and a food alley selling buckwheat pancakes and potato ongsimi dumpling soup.
For a hanok night, Gangneung Ojuk Hanok Village sits beside Ojukheon, about 19 minutes from the station on bus 300, and Seongyojang, a 300-year-old manor by Gyeongpo Lake, rents out whole wings of the house. Seongyojang also opens to day visitors from 09:00 to 18:00 (last tickets 17:30), so expect people in the grounds by day. Book ahead: the Ojuk village releases next month's rooms on the 1st.
FAQ
Is it better to stay in Gyeongpo or Anmok?
Gyeongpo for a first trip, the sunrise and a choice of big hotels; Anmok or Songjeong if you want to spend your evenings at the seaside cafés. They're only a few kilometers apart, and the City 1 bus runs between them.
Can I visit Gangneung as a day trip from Seoul?
Yes. The KTX takes about 2 hours from Seoul Station, and our Gangneung course fits Ojukheon, Jumunjin, the Goblin breakwater, Gyeongpo and Anmok into one day. Staying a night adds the Gyeongpo sunrise and an unhurried evening on Coffee Street.
How do I get around Gangneung without a car?
Yes, by city bus. City 1 (SEA TEA) runs along the coast between Anmok and Jumunjin, and routes such as 202, 223-1 and 300 link the station, Gyeongpo, Anmok and Ojukheon. Pay with a transit card such as T-money: the fare is 10% cheaper, and if you tap again when you get off, your next ride within an hour is free.
When is Gangneung busiest in autumn 2026?
October 19–25. The ITS World Congress runs October 19–23 at Gangneung Olympic Park, and the Gangneung Coffee Festival fills Coffee Street and other venues from October 21 to 25. Book KTX seats and rooms early for that week.
