Yakcheonsa grew out of Yaksuam, a small hermitage named for a well-known spring nearby. One story tells of a Confucian scholar in the 1960s who, praying for 100 days in a small cave to cure an illness, drank spring water in a dream, recovered, built the hermitage and spent the rest of his life there. After the monk Hyein became abbot in 1981, a major building program began, and in 1996 the temple completed Daejeokgwangjeon, a huge concrete hall modeled on early Joseon Buddhist architecture and open from floor to ceiling inside. The temple belongs to the Jogye Order and keeps memorial tablets for King Munjong and Queen Hyeondeok, and for Crown Prince Yeong, the last crown prince of the Korean Empire, and his wife Yi Bang-ja.
