The Garden of Morning Calm was designed and named by Han Sang-kyung, a horticulture professor at Sahmyook University, and opened in May 1996 against the forested slopes of Chungnyeongsan. Its 20 themed gardens are linked by lawns, flower beds and woodland paths, and you can walk in the shade of a Korean pine forest. The Sunken Garden (Hagyeong Jeongwon), planted in the shape of the Korean peninsula, draws the most attention. About 5,000 kinds of plants grow here, including some 300 from Baekdusan, and in winter the garden lights up for its Five-Color Starlight Garden festival.
