Namhansanseong Fortress남한산성

At a glance

Namhansanseong was the eastern of four fortresses that guarded the Joseon capital, Hanyang, on Namhansan about 24 km southeast of Seoul. Its stone walls run 12.4 km in all and once enclosed a whole fortress town, with a temporary royal palace (haenggung), garrison offices, storehouses and around 80 wells. Records tie the site to much older forts, but the walls were built up in earnest in the 17th century; the four main gates and the Sueojangdae command post are among the best-preserved parts. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a provincial park.
