Booking

No booking needed to visit. GetYourGuide sells a tour from Seoul that pairs Maisan's Tapsa with Jeonju Hanok Village, and a private tour from Jeonju.

Maisan, 'horse-ear mountain', is a pair of peaks about 32 km east of Jeonju: Ammaibong (687.4 m) and Sumaibong (681.1 m), with a dozen or so smaller peaks around them. They are made of Cretaceous sediment that hardened into rock and was pushed up, and they change name with the seasons: twin masts rising from the spring mist, dragon's horns in summer green, horse's ears in autumn color, and, because snow does not settle on them, ink-dipped brush tips in winter. On the slopes, Tapsa keeps about 80 stone towers said to stand through any storm, and Eunsusa marks where Taejo, founder of Joseon, is said to have prayed for a hundred days. The area became a provincial park in 1979, and its 3 km approach road turns into a tunnel of cherry blossoms each spring.
