Dokdo is a small volcanic group in the East Sea: two main islets, Dongdo in the east and Seodo in the west, surrounded by rocks with names such as Dongnimmun (Independence Gate) Rock and Chotdae (Candlestick) Rock. The whole group is protected as a natural monument, and seabirds such as black-tailed gulls, streaked shearwaters and storm petrels nest here. The public was first allowed to visit in March 2005, and only Dongdo: the 98.6 m eastern islet with a staffed lighthouse and the wharf where passenger ships berth. Steeper Seodo, 168.5 m high, has a residents' building that fishermen use as a shelter in emergencies.
