At a glance

Nampo-dong's theater district grew after Korea's liberation in 1945, and by the 1960s some 20 cinemas stood around what is now BIFF Square. When the first Busan International Film Festival opened on September 13, 1996, the street was spruced up and given the festival's name. For years it hosted the eve-of-festival party and handprint ceremonies for film figures; the main events have since moved to the Busan Cinema Center in Haeundae, but traces of the early festival remain and the cinemas still screen films. Today it is as much about shopping and street food as movies, and it draws a young crowd.
