Booking
GetYourGuide sells two 10-hour day trips from Seoul that combine Beopjusa with Cheongnamdae; templestays are booked with the temple.
Beopjusa, 'the temple where the Dharma resides,' was founded in 553 under Silla's King Jinheung and grew into a major monastery; Joseon's founder Taejo is said to have prayed here for 100 days before taking the throne. Nearly every building burned during the Japanese invasions of the 1590s, and the temple was rebuilt in the early 1600s. Its star is Palsangjeon, a five-story wooden pagoda 22.7 m tall, which KTO describes as the only wooden pagoda left in Korea; inside, eight paintings show scenes from the Buddha's life. Also look for the 33 m bronze Maitreya Buddha set up in 1990, an 8th-century stone lotus basin and a stone lantern held up by twin lions. Beopjusa is on the UNESCO World Heritage List as one of Korea's 'Sansa' mountain monasteries.
