The Kingdom of the Gods (English comic, VIZ Media)
What it's about
The king has fallen ill and is hidden from view while the powerful Haewon Cho clan takes control of the court. Crown Prince Lee Chang starts asking questions, is branded a traitor and flees south. In Dongnae he finds a clinic where patients die and rise again, hungry for human flesh.
Kim Eun-hee wrote it from her webtoon The Kingdom of the Gods, made with artist Yang Kyung-il. Season 1 was directed by Kim Seong-hun.
Why people love it
It blends court politics, period drama and zombie horror, and viewers around the world called it unique when season 1 came out in January 2019, with some watching all six episodes in a day. Online fans outside Korea also got curious about the gat, the wide-brimmed Joseon hats that varied with rank and occasion.
At the 2nd Asia Contents Awards, Ju Ji-hoon won Best Actor and Kim Eun-hee won Best Writer.
Where to watch & good to know
It's on Netflix in many countries; check your region. There are two seasons of six episodes (2019 and 2020) plus a feature-length special, Kingdom: Ashin of the North (2021). Watch the special after season 2.
Ju Ji-hoon later led The Trauma Code: Heroes on Call, another hit on Netflix.
