Where to stay in Jeju: which area to book, with or without a car

Jeju has no subway and the sights are spread around the coast, so your base matters. Here's how Jeju City, Seogwipo, Seongsan, Aewol and Hallim, and Jungmun compare, how each links to the airport, and a stay to look at in each.

The short answer

Jeju is a big island with no subway, so pick a base by how you'll get around. Without a car, stay in Jeju City or Seogwipo, which both have direct buses from the airport. For the classic sunrise at Seongsan Ilchulbong, spend the night before in Seongsan. Choose Aewol or Hallim on the west coast for cafés and sunsets, which are easiest with a rental car, and Jungmun for big resort hotels with pools.

On a longer trip, consider splitting your stay: a night in Seongsan for the sunrise, then the rest in Seogwipo or Jungmun on the south coast.

Jeju City: next to the airport

Jeju City is the island's largest downtown and home to Jeju International Airport, about 10 minutes by car from the hotels in Yeon-dong and Nohyeong-dong. Yeon-dong has Nuwemaru Street, a pedestrian street of restaurants, bars and shops. In the old center, Dongmun Traditional Market, Jeju's largest and oldest permanent market, includes a night market, and city bus 315 runs there from the airport. Black Pork Street, a strip of grill houses off Chilseong-ro, is in old Jeju City too.

It's also the safe choice if you land late. The airport terminal is closed to passengers from 23:00 to 05:00, so book a room nearby rather than planning to wait.

Seogwipo: waterfalls and the Olle trails

Seogwipo is the main town on the south coast. Its Maeil Olle Market, the largest and oldest permanent market in Seogwipo, sits in the center, close to Lee Jung-seop Street and the entrance to Cheonjiyeon Falls. Jeongbang Waterfall, Korea's only waterfall that drops straight into the sea, is about 20 minutes away on foot. Airport limousines 800 and 801 take about 1 hour 20 minutes, and the 600 runs via Jungmun and ends at Seogwipo KAL Hotel.

The Jeju Olle Tourist Center, where Olle Route 7 starts, is here too, which makes Seogwipo a natural base for walkers.

Seongsan: for the sunrise

Seongsan, on Jeju's eastern tip, is where to sleep if the sunrise from Seongsan Ilchulbong is on your list. The summit trail opens at 05:00 through October 31, 2026 and at 06:00 from November 1, and the stairs take 30–40 minutes. From the airport, express bus 111 ends at Seongsan Port, just past the Seongsan Ilchulbong Entrance stop, about 1 hour 25 minutes after leaving, so you can fly in the evening before.

Staying here also lines up the 14:00 haenyeo diving show on Umutgae Coast and the ferries to Udo from Seongsan Port. Resorts on the Seopjikoji cape are about 3 km from the Goseong-ri bus stops, so plan on a short taxi ride.

Aewol and Hallim: cafés and west-coast sunsets

The northwest coast is Jeju's café and sunset side. The Hagwi–Aewol Coastal Road runs about 9 km past restaurants, cafés and places to stay, and Visit Jeju calls it a popular driving route; the 1.2 km Handam Coastal Trail from Aewol Port is a sunset spot. Farther west are Hallim Park, with its Hyeopjaegul and Ssangyonggul lava caves, and Hyeopjae Beach, with pale shell sand and Biyangdo island offshore.

Express bus 102 runs from the airport via Aewol and Hallim to Moseulpo, taking about 25–40 minutes to Aewol and 43–57 minutes to Hallim. Away from the main road, though, a rental car makes this side of the island much easier.

Jungmun: the resort strip

Jungmun Tourist Complex on the south coast has been developed as a resort area since 1978. Its hotels include The Shilla Jeju, LOTTE HOTEL JEJU, Parnas Hotel Jeju and Grand Josun Jeju, and the 560 m Jungmun Saekdal Beach, popular with surfers, and ICC Jeju are inside the complex. The basalt columns of Jusangjeolli are close by.

Airport limousines 600 and 601 leave from Gate 5. The 601 drives into the Shilla, Lotte and Suites hotels, while the 600 stops at their entrances. Allow roughly 50–90 minutes depending on the bus and your hotel, and check times on the Jeju bus site before you go.
